The term quartz is thought to have evolved out of the German word, Quarz, however today, the word’s origin is untraceable. Quartz is known for being one of the most abundant rock-forming minerals. It is also a constituent of nearly every rock type. Many different varieties and colours of quartz exist, and it has therefore been defined as a group. All forms of quartz have a composition of silicon dioxide.

The term tourmaline, comes from the Singhalese word touramalli, which translates as mixed coloured stones ( Gem brokers ). Similarly, tourmaline as we know it today does not refer to one distinct type of mineral, but rather to a group of minerals which have similar atomic structures and chemical compositions. As a result they exist in a vast assortment of different colours and varieties. And as a gemstone tourmaline is highly prized for this diversity.
