The term fluorite is derived from the Latin word fluere, which means to flow. Fluorite comes in a vast range of colours, but is limited in its use as a gemstone because of its fragile nature. Some delicate varieties, however, are extremely rare and highly prized by collectors. The most rare and valuable forms of fluorite are the pink, reddish-orange, and black varieties. Fluorite is typically fluorescent which means that it will change colour under artificial light. Under UV fluorite it will emit a strong pink or purple light.
